A 42-year-old man with a Ballivor address who turned back to avoid a Garda checkpoint at Dunganny Trim has been sentenced to prison for a second offence of driving without insurance. Keith Elliott, Tower View, Ballivor appeared at Trim District Court. The court was told that defendant did a u-turn but Gardai caught up with him at Supermacs two kilometres away. Defending barrister James O’Brien made a submission that there was no evidence of defendant driving on the R161.
However, Judge Eirinn McKiernan rejected the submission. Court Presenter Sergeant Peter Clarke said that defendant had previous convictions for drug driving and had been disqualified; throwing a firework; unauthorised taking of a vehicle. Mr O’Brien said it had been 14 years since his client’s last conviction for driving without insurance. Judge McKiernan imposed a four-month prison sentence and disqualified defendant for four years.

Separately, 41-year-old Brazilian Alisson De Abreu Curunzi, Dun Reoga, Dunshaughlin was fined €300 and disqualified for four years on conviction for drunken driving. The court was told he had a previous conviction for a similar offence.
