Cathaoirleach of Laytown/ Bettystown MD Paddy Meade has issued the following statement on Pope Francis passing. The passing of Pope Francis marks the end of a papacy defined by humility, compassion, and a deep commitment to social justice. From the very beginning, he stood out as a different kind of leader — one who prioritised the poor, championed reform within the Church, and spoke with clarity and courage on global challenges such as climate change, inequality, and the plight of migrants.

Before becoming Pope, Jorge Mario Bergoglio was deeply engaged in the realities of Argentine society. During his time as Archbishop of Buenos Aires, he became a strong moral voice and was even referred to by some as “the head of the opposition,” due to his willingness to challenge government policies and advocate for the most vulnerable. His leadership was never about politics for its own sake, but about standing up for dignity, justice, and human rights — values he carried into his papacy.

While I never had the opportunity to visit Rome or the Vatican, I was fortunate to attend his visit to Ireland in 2018 — the only papal visit during my lifetime. Though the crowds were smaller than those seen during Pope John Paul II’s historic visit in 1979, the experience was no less powerful. For those of us in attendance, it was a moment of unity, reflection, and faith.

Pope Francis leaves behind a legacy of integrity, courage, and compassion. May he rest in peace, and may his example continue to inspire people across Ireland and the world.
