We wake this morning to the news that Pope Francis has passed away. The announcement said ”At 7.35 this morning the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father.” Yesterday he was in St Peters square at the basilica to celebrate Easter Sunday. He gave his Easter Blessing, speaking briefly. Although he has been recovering from double pneumonia in recent months he still found the fortitude and sense of duty to address the crowd.

There has been messages of sympathy and condolences from all over the world including our president and Taoiseach this morning. The Latin American pontiff was a humble man of simple values trying to progress the Church and deal with child abuse scandals and conservatism of traditions.

He never changed in his beliefs choosing the simpler ways but also held the respect of world leaders and heads of other faiths. Today the world mourns the passing of Pope Francis, he was 88 years of age.Â
