Report Paul Murphy
Concern for the employees of Intel in their “difficult-to-predict” situation has been expressed by the leader of the Fine Gael Party on Meath County Council. Reacting to report that Intel may have to cut 20% of its workforce worldwide, Cllr Gerry O’Connor said that up to 30% of the workforce at the Kildare plant live in Co Meath.
He said that he was basing his estimate on the number of passengers taking the courtesy buses from the M3 Parkway each day. “Obviously, I am concerned for these employees in this difficult-to-predict situation.
Intel will be announcing the redundancies in Quarter 2 this year. Hopefully, due to the importance of the FAB 34 which is fully tooled to make the 18A advanced chip critical for AI, Leixlip will be better placed to avoid major losses. The CEO of Intel has indicated that he wants redundancies in R&D, Marketing, General and administration Divisions but it must be noted that any redundancies by legislation will need to be discussed and agreed with Government.”
He said that in the case of any redundancies both the Government and Meath County Council will work to ensure that the employees are supported in every way possible.
