A horse allowed to run loose reared up and came down on top of a Garda’s shoulder injuring him, Trim District Court was told. Before the court was Craig Keogh (36), Oakleigh, Old Balreask Woods, Navan who was charged with allowing a horse to pose a danger to people and allowing it to wander on 20th January 2024.
The court was told that the horse was seen running towards a Garda car on Trim Road in Navan. Sergeant McNulty and Garda Boyd had tried to contain him , the horse had reared up and come down on his hooves on top of the sergeant’s shoulder, injuring him.
Defending solicitor Dermot Monahan said the horse had been in a field at the old railway station and his client didn’t know the horse was out. He very much regretted the injury to the Garda but said there was low culpability in the case. “He is very regretful and he was taken aback when he heard about the injuries”, he said. Judge Eirinn McKiernan imposed a two-month prison sentence suspended for 12 months.
She was told that the horse had been placed with the Pony Club since the date of the offence.
