A special exhibition to mark the 400th anniversary of the birth of Saint Oliver Plunkett is to be officially launched in Drogheda on Monday. The exhibition which will be held in the exhibition space at Drogheda Civic Offices in Fair Street will consist of vestments from Mullingar Museum and Armagh Cathedral, original casting for the reliquiary holding the head of the saint, original coffin plate from Siena Monastery Drogheda, St Oliver’s crozier (Bachall) from a private collection, three silver crucifixes attributed to Saint Oliver, a collection of books and more. The exhibition is part of a “vibrant festival” commemorating the saint’s birthday.
The Drogheda Civic Trust has already held a seminar “Oliver Plunkett in Historical Context” and other events are planned throughout the year including a procession in Drogheda, a family day in Oldcastle on 29th June, a Mass in Oldcastle on 1st July, a gathering of the Plunkett clan in Loughcrew on 13th July, a Mass at St Oliver’s Pro-Cathedral in Ballybarrack, Dundalk, a gala concert on 5th July featuring soprano Celine Byrne , St Peter’s Male Voice Choir and other performers, the feast of St Oliver will held in the Archdiocese of Armagh and the Diocese of Meath.
