At the monthly meeting of Ashbourne Municipal Meeting today, Tuesday 10th June, saw a vote to provide 79 social homes at Archers Glen in Ashbourne turned down.  In a split vote of three for the proposal and three against, the incoming Cathaoirleach Conor Tormey made the casting vote  to turn down the proposal. The vote will come as disappointing news to many hard pressed families in need of social housing in Meath . The voting went, For; Cllrs Bonner, Jamal & Smith. Against; Cllrs Meyer, Tobin, & Tormey, as Cathaoirleach he had casting vote.

At yesterday’s June monthly meeting of Meath County Council, Cllr Nick Killian appealed to his fellow councillors to vote to provide the 79 houses. Noting it was out of his municipal district but the provision of social housing is much needed in the county. It comes on the back of three housing projects  in Navan (Farganstown), Clonee (Aylesbury House) and Ashbourne (Millrace) providing  231 new homes. To date there has been 542 housed delivered by Meath county council this year.

Senator Keogan had earlier in the week confirmed Independent Cllr Amanda Smith would be supporting the vote and appealed to all councillors in the district to support the council development. The senator said ”This is not a time for NIMBYism (not in my back yard).”
