Sinn Féin TD for Meath East, Darren O’Rourke, raised the need for one-to-one support and engagement for Wellman’s workers with the Minister for Social Protection in the Dáil last week.Deputy O’Rourke says while the immediate focus is on securing as many jobs as possible at Wellman’s, it is equally important that the Department of Social Protection provide comprehensive support. Speaking today, Teachta O’Rourke said;  The news that Wellman International has entered examinership, putting 217 jobs at risk, has come as a devastating blow to workers, their families, and the wider community. This company has been a pillar of the local economy for decades, and the potential loss of these jobs would have severe consequences for the region.

“While efforts must focus on securing the company’s future and protecting as many jobs as possible, it is equally important that workers facing redundancy receive immediate and comprehensive support from the State. I raised this issue with the Minister for Social Protection in the Dáil last week.”I welcome confirmation from Minister Dara Calleary that the Department of Social Protection has engaged with Wellman International since the examinership notification and has met with some affected workers. However, in my firm opinion, the Department must intensify its efforts to ensure every worker receives personalised assistance in accessing their entitlements, retraining opportunities, and employment supports.

“The introduction of pay-related jobseeker’s benefit, providing up to €450 per week, is a positive step and will be a vital lifeline for those affected. It is crucial that workers are fully informed of this support and guided through the application process, particularly given that many long-serving employees may not have engaged with the social welfare system before.”The Department must also ensure that one-to-one Intreo support is prioritised for all workers. “I have also raised the need for a coordinated government response with the Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment to explore all avenues for saving these jobs. The State must act decisively to protect employment in the region while ensuring a robust safety net for those affected.

“My thoughts are with the workers and their families during this difficult time. Sinn Féin will continue to press for urgent action to safeguard jobs and ensure that no worker is left behind.”
