The owner of a tanning shop in Navan has appeared at the local court charged with taking a booking for a tanning session from a minor.Slankauskas Maurius of the “Sun Dream” shop at Preston Place, Navan was prosecuted by the Health Service Executive for having sold the use of a sunbed to a person under the age of 18 in contravention of Section 4(1)(a) of the Public Health (Sunbeds) Act 2014 and Section 22(3) of the Public Health (Sunbeds) Act 2014.

Prosecuting solicitor on behalf of the Hse Dermot Scanlon told Navan District Court that a volunteer minor carried out a test purchase at the Sun Dream premises. This was after the receipt of complaints by members of the public. The owner of the premises sold a sunbed session to that minor and the purchase was witnessed by an environmental health officer. The defendant had no previous convictions, Mr Scanlon said.

Defending solicitor Pauric Murray told the court that his client was aged 52, single with two children and had been in Ireland for 16 years. He had a turnover of €40,000 a year. He said that his client accepted that the booking was taken but that when the person returned for the tanning session he would ask for identification. Judge Peter White imposed a fine of €300 with 12 months to pay and directed defendant to pay €1,300 in legal costs and €400 in inspection costs, all with 12 months to pay.
