Report Paul Murphy
The ancient tradition of celebrating Lady Well Slane in the grounds of Slane Castle was observed by dozens of people who visited the site to yesterday. People travelled from far and wide for the occasion, to pray at the well and collect water from it. The Parish Committee helped organise the event, providing guides who were able to impart information but also to provide a minibus service for the pilgrims from the well to the main Slane-Navan Rd.

Many visitors to the site today were local but there were also people from other parts of Ireland and even one couple from Germany who said that they intended to visit the well but also the Slane Distillery were they were about to pick up another type of water which might not be holy but could be considered medicinal! The occasion is always celebrated on 15th August on the feast of Our Lady of the Assumption. In years past the event was accompanied by a sports and fair day.
