As Ireland held the inauguration of our 10th President, Catherine Connolly, Deputy Thomas Byrne took the occasion to thank President Michael D Higgins for his incredible service to the State. A Presidency is shaped by the personality of the person holding the high office and it is clear that our President’s personality shone through his two terms in office. The fondness of the public for the President is genuinely felt.
Over his 14 years, President Higgins brought a new perspective to the Presidency. He shaped the office but most importantly, he served the office well, and upheld his constitutional duty.
For my own part, I will treasure the fond memories I have of engaging with President Higgins, be it at football matches as Sport Minister, diplomatic introductions as European Affairs Minister, and many more. Most of these interactions took place as Gaeilge and I loved to see the passion that our first citizen showed towards our first language.
Of course, credit must also go to Sabina Higgins, for her outstanding service and the warmth that she brought, in supporting the work of the Áras. Wishing President Higgins and Mrs Higgins every joy and happiness in their next chapter.
