Local author and journalist Anthony Murphy and director of the Mythical Ireland website is to appear appear in a TG4 series about the origin and significance of Irish surnames. He is pictured above with Kerry artist Liam O’Neill on the Hill of Tara. The pair will appear in the series ‘Sloinne’ on Sunday 1st June at 8.30pm.
The O’Neill name derives from the famous High King of Ireland, Niall of the Nine Hostages, who founded the great O’Neill dynasty. In each episode of the series a person goes in search of their surname. The series will range over the whole country finding out about famous and historical figures as well as the clans which shaped the history of Ireland.
This series will focus on the surnames of Mac Gearailt (Fitzgerald), O Briain (O’Brien), O’Neill, De Paor (Power), O Loinsigh (Lynch), and O Gallachoir (Gallagher).
