A call for the building of more social houses along with the provision of sites for the construction of private houses has been made at a meeting of Meath County Council by Sinn Fein Cllr Michael Gallagher. He said that in North Meath the only site seeing development was Carlanstown. In his own village he had seen the provision of just 55 social houses built by the council in the last 50 years and there was
no private development taking place.
There was a need for more input into these communities, he said. The provision of “nodes” had been outlined in the development plan but he saw no effort being made to develop these. “We need private sites, too. We just need development in the rural villages, otherwise we are going to see organisations like the GAA struggling to survive, something that has been recognised at national level. Young couples looking for housing are not able to get houses within their own area.”
