The tragic death of a young mother after she had attended the David Bowie concert in Slane almost 40 years ago is the subject of a new Garda appeal. Twenty-seven-year-old Antoinette Smith’s remains were found in Co Wicklow on 3rd April 1988. On 11th July 1987 Antoinette and a friend attended the Bowie concert, returning by bus to Dublin after the concert.

They arrived at Parnell Square at about 11pm and then went to the La Mirage Discotheque on Parnell Street. They met two men that they knew in the club and stayed with them until they all left at shortly after 2am. When they exited Ms Smith’s fiend left but she herself stayed talking to the two men until they walked to a taxi rank on O’Connell Street. The men got a taxi to the Ballymun area while Ms Smith continued to walk past the Gresham Hotel towards O’Connell Street Bridge.

Her husband later reported her missing to Gardai. Her remains were recovered on Glendoo Mountain near the Lemass Monument close to Glencree/Enniskerry on 3rd April 1988. Her children Lis and Rachel were seven and four at the time of her disappearance and they have issued an appeal for information about her.

Speaking to Rte some time ago, her daughter Lisa said she missed her mother especially on big occasions. “From my memory of her she was a typical man, her fiends have told us she had a great personality and was the life and soil of the party”. She is convinced there are people out there who know something about what happened to Antoinette.

Gardai at Bray Garda Station have appealed to anyone who may have information from 1987 or may have come into possession of information in the intervening years to come forward 01 666 5300 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
