Following the decision by An Coimisiún Pleanála, that has granted planning permission to the daa to increase the number of flights from approximately 65 per night to 95 flights per night. A meeting has been organised by SMTW Forum for the residents of those affected by aircraft noise from Dublin Airport. The meeting will be held at the Coolquoy Lodge tonight (7th August ’25) commencing at 8.00pm.

Following the granting of permission, there are a number of conditions in place but ultimately the planning will allow for an increase in the number of flights to increase in the late evenings. The north runway cannot be used from midnight to 6.00am. CEO Michael O’Leary has been dismissive of the local communities living in the flight paths that affect people. He maintains newer planes produce less noise, that people should not have built houses or lived in the area knowing the airport was there. The necessity too, that as an island nation, we need the airport to serve the growth in numbers flying in and out of Dublin.

This was clear in a recent interview with Pat Kenny on Newstalk but Niamh Maher of SMTW, pictured above,  challenged a number of the assertions in the same interview. She has spoken several times to us at Meath Live, explaining the plight of trying to live under the flight path of the North Runway in the last number of years. She said  ”the increase in night time flights will have a negative impact on peoples’ ability to sleep and that the decision does not take into consideration the health impact on those suffering sleep disturbance as a result of aircraft noise.

In this evenings, emergency meeting, the SMTW Forum are calling on those attending to discuss the decision by An Coimisiún Pleanála, urging families, neighbours and political representatives to attend.
