A 25-year-old driver took off when he saw a Garda car, switched off his lights and drove at speed through a busy junction, Trim District Court was told. Before the court was Alex Kavanagh, The Courtyard, Enfield who faced four charges of dangerous driving at Halltown Crossroads Navan, Black Friary Trim, Kilcarn Navan and Kentstown Navan on 5 th May 2023.
Court Presenter Sergeant Peter Clarke said that despite the fact that he had taken off at speed Gardai were able to identify him. At Navan Garda Station he said he panicked because he believed his paperwork was not in order. Gardai told the court that the junction he drove through was a very busy one and the incident had taken place at 11.30 at night.
He had 26 previous convictions, 17 of them for road traffic offences. In 2024 he had been disqualified for four years for driving without insurance and he had also been disqualified in 2023 for an insurance offence. At another stage he had been given a four-month suspended prison sentence.
Defending solicitor Miriam Regan said that most of her client’s offending had happened in 2022 when he was homeless and sleeping in a car. Matters had now come back on track and he had employment. Judge Eirinn McKiernan imposed a two-month prison sentence suspended for 12 months and disqualified him from driving for four years. “If you’re back in front of me there’ll be serious consequences”, she told him.
Separately, Patrick Sheridan (35), Blackwood, Robertstown, Kildare was fined €200 and disqualified for one year for drug driving at Johnstown Road Enfield on 11 th June last year.
