Report Paul Murphy
Gardai have confirmed the death of a man whose body was discovered following a fire at his home in Slane. Matthew (Matsie) McConnon, Bryanstown, Kells Road, Slane was a well-known musician who was a lifelong member of Stackallan Pitch and Putt Club. In his working life he had been employed as a dental technician at McDonagh’s practice at Flower Hill, Navan.
On Christmas Eve Gardai and emergency services responded to a report of the discovery of a body at the deceased’s home in Slane. The man in his 70s was pronounced deceased at the scene and the body was removed to the mortuary at Navan Hospital for post mortem examination. The coroner or Meath has been notified. It was suggested that the fire at Mr McConnon’s home may have occurred several days beforehand and had burned itself out.
Local people said that it was Mr McConnon’s practice to leave a message bag hanging on his front gate to await the arrival of the Local Link bus to take him into Navan and it was the continued presence of the bag on the gate that raised the alert that something was amiss.
