A Meath-based company prosecuted in the local circuit court over a workplace accident has been fined €150,000. The Meade Potato Company Unlimited was prosecuted over the accident which occurred in June 2022. Trim Circuit Court was told that a man became trapped after his right arm was pulled into the brush rollers of a Haith Root Veg polishing machine. He suffered life-changing injuries as a result, the court heard.
The company pleaded guilty to two charges in breach of the Safety, Health and Welfare Work Act 2005. It admitted that it failed to manage and conduct work activities in such a way as to ensure, as far as reasonably practicable, the safety, health and welfare of an employee. Commenting on the case the chief executive of the Hsa Mark Cullen said employers must ensure that work activities were managed and overseen with robust safety measures in place.
