A major– is being lined up for May 4th bank holiday. The walk is being held to commemorate Dr Anne Merriman, founder of Hospice Africa Uganda, who died a year ago. The movement has just celebrated St Patrick’s Day with a great coming together of Irish and Ugandan communities in Kampala where Dr Merriman and many Irish volunteers and supporters (and honorary Irish!) celebrated with a special ball.
The work to care for patients and families at the three hospices in Uganda is supported by donations from the general public and donors such as the Michael Guinee Charitable Foundation. These donations underpin many of the key clinical and other activities throughout the year.
A spokesperson for the hospice movement said that the support provided by friends and supporters in Ireland “is more important than ever to ensure its continuation”. People who can’t make the walk itself are welcome to come to the Medical Missionaries of Mary house in Drogheda on the morning of the event to catch up with other friends and supporters or they can donate online.
“If you have family or friends who would like to join please spread the word.
This promises to be a lovely gathering with time to chat away as we wind our way through the delights of the Boyne Valley over a 13km or 25km stroll with Anne Merriman’s spirit guiding our way (and also guided in person by Hospice Africa Ireland volunteers”.
