Hundreds of churchgoers attending a ceremony in a Navan church were shocked yesterday (Saturday 21st March) after a woman declared “I have a bomb strapped to me”.

The Confirmation being conducted at St Mary’s Church by the Bishop of Meath Thomas Deenihan was interrupted when the woman stood up and told the congregation that she had a bomb. Several hundred young people from four schools in the town were in the church with parents and sponsors when the incident took place.

A witness told Meath Live that several people, including teachers, rushed forward when the woman said ‘I have a bomb strapped to me’. The woman was ushered out of the church and Gardai were alerted. A Garda spokesperson said that officers had responded to a public order incident in the town at around 1pm.

The spokesperson said that a woman aged in her 40s was arrested at the scene and has since been charged. She is due to appear in court at a later date. “As this matter is now before the courts there is no further information available”, a statement said.
