A 47-year-old man caught with drugs in his possession was “manipulated by other parties” his solicitor told a local court.
Eugene Njoku with an address at Millbrook, Johnstown, Navan was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled drug, cocaine, at Ratholdren Road, Navan on 7th October 2022.
Detective Garda Paul Cullen said that one of the defendant’s jobs was as a worker at Palace Nightclub in Navan. He agreed with defence solicitor Dermot Monahan that the defendant had not come to Garda attention since the night he was arrested.
The solicitor said his client was a very hardworking man who was holding down three jobs. “I would say he was manipulated by other parties”. His client had a donation of €500 available in court. He had no previous convictions.
Judge Eirinn McKiernan said that it was particularly serious that defendant was working in a nightclub among vulnerable young people. She sentenced him to three months imprisonment and rejected appeals to suspend the sentence.
