Members of Kells Lively Citizens enjoyed a memorable and educational visit to Leinster House this week, taking in both the political life and rich history of one of Ireland’s most significant buildings. The group, which has been active in the Kells community for many years, regularly organises trips, tours, social outings and nights away for its members, helping to foster a strong sense of camaraderie, friendship and community spirit among local people.

During their visit to Dublin, members were given a detailed guided tour of Leinster House, learning about the building’s unique and fascinating history. Originally constructed as a ducal palace for the Duke of Leinster in the 18th century, the building later served as a lecture hall and cultural venue for the Royal Dublin Society before eventually becoming the home of Oireachtas Éireann in 1922.

The group also had the opportunity to sit in the public gallery and observe proceedings in DĂ¡il Éireann, gaining a firsthand insight into the workings of Irish democracy and national political life. The visitors were delighted to meet with the Taoiseach, who took time from a busy schedule to speak with members of the group during their visit.

The trip was organised by Kells community representative Cormac Corr PC, in collaboration with Meath Senator Sharon Keogan, whose assistance and support helped make the visit such a success. Special thanks have also been extended to Senator Keogan’s staff and the staff of Leinster House for their warm hospitality, informative tour and generous welcome throughout the day.

Speaking afterwards, members described the trip as both enjoyable and educational, with many coming away not only with a greater understanding of Ireland’s democratic institutions, but also with a deeper appreciation for the remarkable history attached to Leinster House itself. The visit was widely regarded as another successful outing for Kells Lively Citizens and a day that will long be remembered by all who attended.
