Meath East Fianna Fáil TD and Minister for European Affairs, Thomas Byrne, has welcomed emergency EU measures targeted at reducing energy prices.

I welcome the agreement reached by the Irish Government and all EU member states on emergency interventions in the electricity markets.

It is against fairness, in the face of mass economic challenges, that certain energy suppliers have continued to make substantial financial gains while ordinary people face heavy bills. In response, Ireland and the EU have agreed to impose a Windfall Tax on the profits of certain energy companies. Crucially, the proceeds from these emergency measures will be used to provide financial supports to households and companies.

These measures are a clear example of our collective commitment to shield citizens from the brunt of Putin’s weaponization of gas supplies”.
