It has been announced that The D Hotel, Marsh Road the largest hotel in the town will cease to function as a hotel and will offer the 111 hotel rooms for those seeking international protection. Letters were issued to elected officials today and there has been shock expressed by local representatives including Deputy Mayor of  Drogheda Kevin Callan.

The hotel was sold last year for €11m to hotelier Richard McDermott.

It is understood that the rooms can accommodate up to 500 people.

He describes the decision as having drastic economic and social consequences to the town.

There appears to have been no prior communication with any local community organisations including the politicians,

as well as business and tourism related businesses which will feel the impact of today’s announcement.

This comes on news yesterday, that M&S Department Store is to close its doors at the Laurence Shopping Centre with a loss of  57 jobs  in the town. The management plan to close its operation on the 8th March.

It claims there has been a lack of footfall at the centre and the fact that  they were not profitable going forward.
