Meath Labour calls on the Minister for Education and Youth, Helen McEntee, to clarify her position on permanent contracts for teachers announced in advance of the teacher unions’ conferences. Trim area Labour Party spokesperson, Sandy Gallagher, said that teachers should not subjected to differential employment contracts depending on when they commence employment.

“The Minister must clarify the situation as it relates to permanent contracts for teachers. Do the measures announced on Easter Monday apply to all teachers looking for a permanent position, or just for newly qualified teachers. The crisis with recruitment and retention relates to teachers across the board, not just those who will come into the classroom this September.

“It would be deeply unfair for teachers who are just starting out to leapfrog their peers who have sought permanent contracts for years.
Meath Labour is adamant that not only are permanent contracts needed to address the teacher supply and recruitment crisis, the charade of giving permanent contracts for non-full-time hours must end immediately. It is high time to end the discriminatory practices introduced into public service employment following the economic crash in 2008.
