Report Paul Murphy
Navan is on the rise in its fight against litter a report today has found and the news has been welcomed by the town’s Mayor. The anti-litter league is conducted by Irish Business Against Litter (Ibal) and comes out with regular reports on how we are performing on the litter front. Navan is now 28th out of 40 towns surveyed, an improvement on 2024 when it was listed as 32nd in the league.

Navan Mayor Cllr Eddie Fennessy said the report records a big improvement for Navan, having climbed 4 spaces to 28th . ”That is overall good progress, he said. “Different parts of the town were inspected this time which was good. I note my own estate Balreask Village came in for particular praise and I commend the local residents who work hard there every year. It was great as for areas under the charge of the council and that’s a great reflection of the the  work carried out by the district engineer and his staff in the town.

They put a huge effort into keeping Navan tidy every day. The worst areas were the Foresters car park and an associated site which are both in private ownership, a bridge which is in the care of the Opw and around a gas network box on Academy Street which is also an area the council don’t have responsibility for maintaining.

“My term of office as Mayor finishes this week and to be honest this is a nice way to finish. We have a great team with good people. What this report tells me is that with a little bit of coordination between the council, landowners and service providers Navan can certainly climb that league table and place ourselves in the top 10 where we belong.”
