A serving Garda has been convicted of drunken driving and has had a disqualification imposed on him at a local court. Joseph Rochford with an address in Co Meath appeared at Trim District Court charged with the offence following a collision with another vehicle at Bective Bridge, Co Meath on 27th November 2023.

Evidence had been given by Gardai that defendant had been arrested following their conclusion that he was incapable of having proper control over a vehicle because of intoxication. He had admitted at the scene that he had consumed three pints of alcohol in a local pub before the collision.

A motorist had given evidence that an incoming vehicle had collided with his vehicle, driving him into the wall of the bridge. Judge Shalom Binchy who heard evidence in the case asked for written submissions to be made to her from prosecuting and defence barristers. She convicted defendant and imposed a fine of €750 with a three-year disqualification on the drink- driving charge and a fine of €500 on a charge of careless driving.
