A documentary film on the life of Matt Talbot, a man who recovered from alcoholism through the power of prayer is to be shown on Navan this coming February. Entitled Matt Talbot:Urban Mystic it portrays the life of a warehouse worker who became addicted to alcohol. At age 28 he decided to reform and fought personal battles with addiction, using the power of prayer to help him stay sober.
Born in 1856 he collapsed and died at Granby Lane in the Dublin North Inner City in 1925. Although not immediately identified at the scene his body was removed to Jervis Street Hospital where he was undressed. Three penitential chains were found wrapped around his body. The centenary of his death was marked by ceremonies during 2025.
The documentary film’s director is Bill Rose and it stars Timothy Dolan, Paul Darren and Judith Feingold. There are no charges or fees attached to the public screenings of the film but it is supported by public subscription. The Knights of St Columbanus in Navan will screen the documentary at its centre in Navan on 16th February at 8pm. A spokesperson for the Knights said that they were looking forward to bringing the film to the people of Navan but advised that space at their centre is limited.
