A 45-year-old man who was said to have been highly intoxicated in public and abused Gardai has been given a court option of paying money to charity to avoid a conviction. Paul Heffernan, Ashvale Court, Duleek was charged with threatening, abusive and insulting behaviour on 13 th October last year. Gardai alleged that defendant told them “you’d better be able to run because I’m going to do you” and called them “b******s and “c***s” all the way to Ashbourne garda Station following his arrest.

Garda Keogh told the court “He didn’t even know where he was”. Solicitor Mr Cahalane said that the offence was totally out of character for his client. He apologised for the absence of his client who had had to leave court due to his mother’s sudden illness. Judge Derek Cooney gave defendant the option of paying a €500 donation to the Macdar organisation and said if the money was paid by early November he would strike the charge out.

Bernard Duke (47), Elm View, Clogherboy Park, Navan as fined €400 for being drunk in public at Commons Road on 22 nd October last year. Lisa Jarvis (32), Gethin Stores, Oldtown, Meath was charged with intoxication in public at Allenstown, Kells on 30 th December last. Garda Hughes told the court that defendant was highly intoxicated and unsteady on her feet. Barrister Paul Noctor said there had ben a domestic altercation at the scene. The judge imposed a €100 fine.
