Fine Gael Cllr Sharon Tolan has warmly welcomed the allocation of €1,000,000 in funding for the Eastham Road Cycling and Pedestrian Scheme, describing it as a major investment and boost for safety, accessibility and quality of life in East Meath. The funding will support the development of dedicated cycling and pedestrian infrastructure along Eastham Road, a key route within the area, and provide safe connectivity between Donacarney and Bettystown. The scheme will improve safety for all road users while encouraging more people to walk and cycle for everyday journeys.

Welcoming the announcement, Cllr Tolan said: “This €1 million investment is fantastic news for East Meath. Eastham Road is a busy and important route, and this scheme will make a real difference for pedestrians, cyclists, families and commuters who use it every day. It is about creating safer streets and giving people real, sustainable travel options.”

Cllr Tolan highlighted that the project aligns with both local and national objectives to promote active travel, reduce traffic congestion and support healthier communities. “Investment like this shows a clear commitment to active travel and to building communities that are safer, healthier and more connected. I am particularly pleased to see funding directed towards infrastructure that benefits people of all ages, from schoolchildren to older residents. I am also delighted that this project includes vital safety features and public lighting at Bettystown Cross, which I have been highlighting as a dangerous spot for the past number of years.”

The Eastham Road Cycling and Pedestrian Scheme will enhance connectivity between residential areas and local amenities, while also supporting climate action goals by reducing reliance on private car use. “I’m looking forward to seeing this vital project move to tender and construction stage this year.”
