The National Greyhound Racing Awards hosted in Shelbourne Park Greyhound Stadium on Sunday night recognised Yvonne Barry with the Special Merit Award, celebrating a lifetime devoted to the sport of greyhound racing. Yvonne’s life story is inseparable from the story of modern greyhound racing in Ireland, reflecting decades of dedication, passion, and influence.

Born into a family where greyhounds were part of everyday life, Yvonne’s family name has long been associated with the sport. The “Baytown” prefix, near her home in Dunboyne, Co. Meath, traces back to her uncle Paddy in 1937. From that farm emerged a lineage of greyhounds and a legacy that continues to leave a lasting mark on Irish racing.

Following the passing of her uncle in 1962, her father, the legendary Tommy Barry, took over the farm and maintained the family tradition. Growing up in this environment, Yvonne naturally became involved in every facet of greyhound racing, cultivating an unparalleled depth of experience as an owner, trainer, breeder, bookmaker, and sponsor.

Yvonne first stepped into the betting ring alongside her father at Boyne Valley Greyhound track in Navan. When the track closed, she continued with him at Mullingar, working the pitch together. Eventually, she established her own pitch at Shelbourne Park, where she has stood since, alongside her brother Bernard. Her commitment, knowledge, and passion for the sport have made her a respected figure within the greyhound racing community.

The Special Merit Award recognises not only Yvonne’s remarkable career but also the enduring influence of the Barry family on Irish greyhound racing. Her contribution exemplifies the heart, tradition, and spirit of the sport, making her an exceptionally deserving recipient of this prestigious honour.
