A Dunshaughlin nail bar employed a non-Irish person who had an appropriate work permit but which did not cover that particular premises, a local court was told. Lotus Hand and Foot Spa Ltd of Main Street was prosecuted by the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment for employing a person who did not have the relevant work permit.
Prosecuting solicitor David McEntee said the lapse was discovered during an inspection of the premises by the Workplace Relations Commission. A defending solicitor said that the company employed the person who did have a permit but it was one that covered a different workplace, not the nail salon. The owner did not understand the difference between the different types of permits. They had “put their hands up and were very embarrassed”. They had no previous convictions.
Judge Eirinn McKiernan directed the company to pay a donation of €300 to Meath Women’s Refuge. Mr McEntee asked for costs of €984 to be paid but the judge said she could not impose that on a small business and instead directed it to pay €400 costs.
