A woman who has been a Meath councillor for 17 years is expected to be nominated for the position of Cathaoirleach of Meath County Council when the council election for the post takes place on Monday. Fianna Fail councillor Wayne Harding is in the last few hours of his position as cathaoirleach. It is expected that Fine Gael councillor Sarah Reilly will be nominated as part of a political pact which will sees a rotation of the post of chair and vice-chair between Fianna Fail and Fine Gael.

Cllr Reilly is from Kells. She was educated at Our Lady of Mercy Secondary School and Eureka Secondary School Kells. From there she studied at University College Galway and was awarded a BA in Legal Science, Sociology and Politics. Later, she studied at Griffith College for her professional solicitors exams. Her Masters of Rights and Social Policy was acquired in NUI Maynooth in 2013.

When she first ran for election for Fine Gael in 2009 in Kells Town elections she headed the poll. She served on Kells Town Council for five years and was elected cathaoirleach. She ran for Fine Gael again in 2014 and headed the poll, taking a seat on Meath County Council. She has also served as chairperson of the Housing, Community and Cultural Strategic Policy Committee of Meath County Council. She was re-elected to the council in 2019 and 2024.
