The death has occurred of the actress Laurie Morton ,a native of Athboy, at the age of 98. She died on Wednesday December 28 at Dublin’s Royal Hospital in Donnybrook.

She played the role of Peggy in Tolka Row, RTÉ’s first-ever soap opera, which ran in the early 1960s and was married to the late actor David Kelly, who predeceased her in 2013.

Tolka Row was set in a fictional Dublin suburb and was based on Maura Laverty’s play of the same name. It was first broadcast on 3 January 1964 and aired for five seasons until it ended in May 1968.

To a younger generation Morton, who was pre deceased by her husband actor David Kelly, was best known as the Whirlygig Witch in Fortycoats a spin off from the popular children’s show, Wanderly Wagon.
