Aontú councillor Emer Toíbin has blasted Meath County Council decision to spend millions of euro on a new Council chamber at its Buvinda house HQ as a white elephant project.

The new three-story building  will also provide additional office space for 155 staff and is expected to cost up to up to 26 million euro.

The planning application is currently with An Bord Pleanála and if approved, work is set to begin this year with a target completion time of two to three years.

Speaking to LMFM’s Michael Reade show an angry Toíbin said, ‘ There is a 12,000 population in Johnstown which for years looking for community amenities and nothing has been done for them.

‘Nothing ever gets built there and then they see a sign on their doorstep outside Buvinda House which is a planning application for the councils new chamber,

‘What seems to be forgotten is we already have a council chamber on Railway Street.’
