The Aontú Leader and Meath West TD Peadar Tóibín has said that the narrow margin by which the deal struck between the Tara Mines parent company Boliden and the unions representing the workers has passed the workforce showcases the anger that exists at the company.

He told Meath Live, “Workers at Tara Mines have been instructed to go home in the past hour. They are to be laid off. It is an incredibly difficult day for Co Meath, with huge ramifications. I am extremely concerned for those who are losing their incomes and for their families. I am concerned for their mental health. I am concerned about child poverty, about back to school costs facing these families, rising rents and inflation. This is the worst possible time for this economic and employment catastrophe to happen”.

Deputy Tóibín continued: “Every arm of the State must be reached out to support these workers. The Minister for Social Protection and the Minister for Enterprise must, with every fibre of their being, support them in their plight. We need to ensure that as the Dáil goes on holidays today that this issue is not allowed to fall off the political agenda. The Minister for Enterprise promised to meet local TDs in Meath to discuss solutions for Tara Mines. This meeting must proceed, regardless of the fact that the Dáil is in recess”.

“I struggle to articulate just how disastrous recent developments have been for the people of Meath. The amount of stress being experienced by people affected is astronomical. The banks need to step up and provide mortgage holidays to the workers affected during this period. I will be working on behalf of the workers in Tara Mines to negotiate fair deals with their banks”, concluded Tóibín.
