A 45-yerar-old man who was detected by Garda Casey driving uninsured at Kinnegad five years ago has five previous convictions for driving without insurance, a court has been told. Joe Mullen, Park View, Clane, Co Kildare appeared at Trim District Court. Judge Eirinn McKiernan told defending barrister James O’Brien “He has a terrible record” when she heard that he had had five convictions for similar offences which resulted in two driving bans of two years (2019) and six years (2021).

Mr O’Brien said that his client had had a very successful business and was self-employed. He was now out of work and because he was self-employed he had no social welfare support. “He was struggling for most of the time”, he said. The judge imposed a four-month prison sentence suspended for 18 months and disqualified defendant from driving for four years.

Another Uninsured Driver Had Previous Convictions

The court also heard that Amanda Daly (40), Cluain Loinn, Oldcastle had been detected by Garda Maloney while she was driving without insurance on 17th November 2019. Court Presenter Sergeant Peter Clarke said defendant had three previous convictions for driving without insurance and had had periods of disqualification of one year (on two occasions) and two years along with fines totalling €3,300. Defending solicitor Maurice Regan said that his client was extremely apologetic. Her husband had had a serious illness and she had difficulty during that time. His client had never had the benefit of a suspended sentence, he said. Judge McKiernan said she was sorry about defendant’s personal circumstances. She sentenced her to four months imprisonment suspended for 18 months and disqualified her for four years. “If you come back before me again you’ll go into custody”, she said.
