Report Paul Murphy
A helicopter crew and members of the Coastguard are searching the sea at Laytown this evening following an incident in which a young male was declared missing in the River Nanny. The alarm was raised by a member of the public and there was an immediate response from the Dublin-based R116 helicopter and the Drogheda Coast Guard. The Department of Transport said conditions were smooth with a water temperature of 16 degrees. The air-sea rescue is continuing this evening with the involvement of Drogheda Coast Guard and Gardai. The alarm was raised at 6.12pm.

A Navan resident who had been walking in the area spoke to Meath Live News. She said that a child or young adult was swimming in the area where the Nanny meets the sea at Laytown. She had seen the Coastguard helicopter, Gardai involved in the attempted rescue. The woman said that she and a family member were walking their dog on the back strand near the car park and were crossing the bridge there when they saw the aftermath of the incident. “The poor family were waiting there. It was awful”, she said.
