A 39-year-old Chinese man has appeared at a local court twice in the past few days in connection with an alleged sexual assault. The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was stated to be a Chinese national and has been charged with an offence dated to 30th December 2023. When the accused appeared at Trim District Court last Tuesday a Garda said he was objecting to bail on the grounds the accused had no ties to Ireland.
In reply to defending barrister James O’Brien the Garda said that defendant was interviewed on the date of the alleged assault. He was again interviewed on a separate date at Dublin Airport and taken to the Garda station there. He had been approached by a Garda when he got onto an aircraft and had voluntarily returned to the airport. The accused had been in this country in connection with a separate civil mater, the Garda added. Judge Shalom Binchy set bail terms of €620,000 with €10,000 to be lodged in cash, Conditions were also attached to the bail.
The accused again appeared at Trim District Court on Thursday and was remanded to 12th August to allow for preparation of a book of evidence in the case.
