Ground rules for meetings between potential candidates for the Presidential election who want to lobby to be put on the ticket, and councillors, were outlined at a meeting of Meath County Council on Monday. Potential candidates need to win the nomination of four of the country’s 31 local councils in order to be able to run in the election. The meeting between potential candidates and Meath councillors will
take place on 22nd September at 9.30.

Cllrs David Gilroy and Nick Killian asked about the arrangements for the meeting, Council Chief Executive Kieran Keogh said that a Presidential Order must be made. Before a Presidential election the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage must issue a “Presidential Election Order” and this sets out arrangements for the election including the last day for receipt of nominations; the place in which the presidential returning officer will rule upon nominations on the last day that nominations can be received; the address at which nominations can be received; and the day on which the election will take place (polling day). Each candidate will be given 8-10 minutes to address the councillors and councillors may nominate candidate.
