Report Paul Murphy
A major update of the electoral register in advance of the Presidential election is needed a Sinn Fein councillor has told Meath County Council. Maria White put down the motion at the September meeting of the council. She said that the first ever Oversight Report published in May last highlighted the need for improved completeness and accuracy of electoral registers nationally.
Officials replied that the electorate for Meath is now 165,692. The Electoral Commission report last May had identified some gaps in the date on the Meath register which generally relate to data collected prior to the requirement for Eircode’s, PPSNs, emails etc.
“Due to the transient nature of the current population and this county’s proximity to Dublin registration details needed to be constantly updated, and the Registration Authority is dependent to a large extent on engagement from the electors.
The introduction of the online registration portal in 2022, accessed via checktheregister.ie has made registering to vote more accessible now than ever, the officials said.
