A 27-year-old woman caught with drugs and drug-dealing paraphernalia has been told by a judge that there was no excuse for selling drugs to vulnerable people. Aoife Fitzsimons, Ballinvalley, Oldcastle faced four charges of drug possession at Preston Cross, Oldcastle on 15 th November 2024. There were two charges of drug possession and two charges of possession of drugs for sale or supply.
The court was told that defendant was stopped by Detective Garda Egan. Cannabis valued at €1,109 and €780 cash was seized along with a grinder, deal bags and a phone. The defendant had 13 previous conviction, all for road traffic offences.
Defending solicitor Miriam Regan told Judge Eirinn McKiernan that her client had had an accident followed by surgery and was unable to work. She said that it wasn’t a money making business and she was “only supplying to friends”. The judge said “I don’t believe that for one second”. Ms Regan said that her client accepted that what she had done was “wrong, immoral and illegal”. Her client was now engaged in the workforce.
Judge McKiernan said there was no excuse for what defendant had done. She had been selling to vulnerable people. Families were being destroyed by drugs, she added. She sentenced defendant to two months imprisonment.
