A call for an extension of the 60kph speed limit on the Proudstown Road from Simonstown lane to include the entrance and exit at the racecourse has been made at a meeting of the Navan Municipal District. Cllr John Duffy made the call and said the extension was necessary because of the increased daily activity at the racecourse and additional traffic entering and exiting Donaghmore Lane. He said this was included as part of a detailed design for the area carried out in Meath County Council a number of years ago.
He said that the area would be coming in under new speed regulations. Referring to the previous plan he asked what had become of it. He remembered seeing that plan and it included a footpath. That was a very extensive plan at the time, he said.
Independent Cllr Francis Deane said he remembered the plan very well and the council had made good progress towards getting it in place. The councillors had met Horseracing Ireland at the time. Cllr Deane said the road was dangerous on racing day. An official said that priority for road works would be given to such locations as schools and community centre. He said he would try to trace down the original plan.
Navan racecourse will see the third Navan Racing Festival in mid November (15th & 16th November) which will see numbers over the weekend that are estimated at close to over 10,000 attending the festival.
