Compliments for Navan’s county council executive engineer Shane Durcan were flying in his direction at the meeting of the local municipal district after he delivered a run-down on various maintenance works in progress in the area. Among the items covered in his report were drainage works on the Slane Road, new kerb at Newgate, repairs to gullies and water cuts; footpath works Academy Street; Abbey Road kerb repair; repairs to signs; signs erected for Christmas shop local; maintenance at Boreen Keel; maintenance at St Finian’s Cemetery; tree pruning and dead tree removal; removal of debris from bonfire sites; road sweepers in operation; clean-up after storms Amy and Bram; power washing town centre; walls and footpaths power washed St Finian’s Cemetery.

Independent Cllr Alan Lawes thanked Shane and his team for all their work during the year. The whole team had to be congratulated for what they had done. “I think the town is looking great. My own area of Johnstown is looking great and it’s a credit to Shane and his team. Well done and keep up the great work. Happy Christmas to you and the group”.

Fine Gael Cllr Yemi Adenuga thanked Shane and his group for all their work in the town. She asked if something could be done about trees that were blocking pubic lighting in Athlumney. Aontu Cllr Emer Toibin also complimented the engineer. She said he always came back promptly in answer to queries, even if the answer might sometimes be a “no”. “I think Navan is looking fabulous”, she said. She was happy with the work done on the back of the Fair Green.

Sinn Fein Cllr Eddie Fennessy also came in with thanks to the engineer, especially for the work on bollards at St Mary’s Park and works in other areas. Independent Cllr Francis Deane also expressed his appreciation for the work done. “He’s very efficient. He’s back quickly with a yes or no, a straight answer.
“Well done Shane”, Fine Gael Cllr John Duffy said. Cathaoirleach Cllr Padraig Fitzsimons said “We’re very grateful and appreciative that we have you. Keep up the good work.”
