An attack by a pitbull dog on another dog resulted in a prosecution of a 44 year-old man at Trim District Court. Stephen Reilly of Beechmount Grove, Navan who was walking the pitbull for a friend faced counts in respect of the animal not wearing a muzzle and being uncontrolled. The court heard that the defendant as well as the injured party who was bitten sustained injuries in the incident in trying to separate the two dogs. The pitbull was later put down.
Judge Eirinn McKiernan deferred sentence to obtain a victim impact statement, adjourning the case to June 16 next. The Judge was told by Sergeant Alan Ratcliffe that the attack occurred on June 5 last year at Limekiln Hill, Navan. A mother and daughter were out walking when the dog they were walking was attacked by another dog. The injured party received a number of injuries.
The Garda received a report from the injured party, and identified the defendant, who provided a voluntary statement. Maurice Regan said the defendant made admissions. The offending dog—a pit-bull was euthanised. The defendant had volunteered to walk the dog of a friend when the incident occurred. It got out of the choke chain and escaped and ran after the other dog. The defendant suffered injuries in trying to break up the dogs.
