What started back in 2005, a helping hand to the local community in Ashbourne and surrounds to help families tidy up their homes, for a modest charge, has become an outstanding community event. Back at the outset, Independent Cllr Joe Bonner, saw the need to offer the community for a low cost service to recycle unwanted items that cluttered the house and garage. He set up the event and it has now become a trusted community recycling event held twice a year in April and September of the year, collecting over 3,000 tones over the years.

Why is is it so successful, one might wonder, Bonner and his team saw the need for such an event in the growing village of Ashbourne. As south Meath’s population continued so too the did the need and demand for such services. In his own words, Cllr Bonner points says” This is a not-for-profit community event, providing  a convenient and affordable opportunity to recycle a wide range of household items and bulky household waste.”

Cllr Joe Bonner highlights the significant benefits of the community events over the last 21 years.

As the weekend fast approaches,  this Saturday, 19th September ’26,  at Ashbourne Retail Park from 8.00 am to 4.00 pm,  all welcome to avail of the community event. Accepted items include: Bulky household waste (modest charges apply), Electrical goods and white goods, Batteries and  Confidential document shredding. There is no charge for the disposal of white goods or any item with a plug. Please note that paint will not be accepted at this event.

The event will be Celebrating 21 Years of Community Recycling and in that time over the past 21 years, more than 40 Community Recycling Events have been held across Meath East, collecting over 3,070 tonnes of material for recycling and recovery. As part of the 21st anniversary celebrations there is also a free draw for all participants who wish to enter to win a prize.

In the lead up to the event Cllr Bonner thanks to all who give up their and energy to have helped to make the events successful and continues a much needed service at a modest cost to the community who avail of the event.
