Fianna Fáils Tommy Reilly has emphasised the need for Meath County Council to prioritise safety in Old Johnstown ahead of a proposed revamp of the area.

He told Meath Live, ‘ While the redevelopment of the area s very welcome there are other areas need addressing before it begins.

‘There are no footpaths at all on the northern side f the village and a primarily elderly community live there so i would be of the opinion footpaths should be installed as a basic safety measure and this should be done before anything else.’

The council proposes to develop a new village centre along with housing units and a civic space.

A number of derelict buildings have been bought by the local authority and it is understood they will be restored and given up for community use.

The regeneration project is expected to get underway late this year.
