Long serving Fianna Fáil councillor Sean Drew has had a dramatic change of  heart and is set contest the Kells area local elections in June.

Drew initially revealed some weeks ago that he was pulling out of politics but now has been persuaded to go again.

He was unavailable for comment this morning but a source confirmed, ‘Sean will be an FF candidate this time around, he walked away initially because of fierce criticism he faced locally over a statement he made welcoming Ukrainian refugees to Kells which didn’t sit well with everyone .

‘When he decided to step away the local cumann put forward a few names, male and female, who were interviewed but clearly the powers that be struggled to find anyone suitable.

‘When this was made clear to him Sean, out of party loyalty agreed to return.’

In the last elections in 2019 results saw the popular Drew top the poll with 1,996, first preferences that saw him being elected on the first count.
