Meath………1-22
Kerry,,……..0-16
Whisper it softly Meath are three wins from claiming the Sam Maguire for the eight time. And having defeated two of the big guns left in the race why should Robbie Brennan’s young guns fear anyone. Despite the heavy rain Meath played the better football over the 70 minutes. They lead at halftime and out from a 0-14 to 0-8. Kerry did get to within two points into the middle of the second half but that was it. Meath were deserving of the victory in a rain soaked Glenisk O’Connor Park in Tullamore but that didn’t deter the large Meath support who had travelled. Â
This superb performance against the All Ireland favourites albeit a Kerry side decimated by injuries saw the Royals again reach the levels they attained when previously beating the Dubs and they did so by applying the same principles of skill allied to hard work.
Of all the sides left in contention only Armagh have shown similar propensity to Meath for kicking two pointers and orange flags from Eoghan Frayne and Ruairi Kinsella ensured Meath led by six 0-14 to 0-8 at the break before a well finished Brian Menton goal in the 56th minute snuffed out any semblance of a Kingdom revival.
Meath now find themselves in the All-Ireland quarter final having built on the losses his year to Cork, Monaghan, Louth (twice) and can consider themselves worthy opponents have put Dublin and Kerry to the sword in the All- Ireland Series . Colm Coyle stated to Meath Live you have to learn more from your losses than your wins and Meath have so far proved they can learn . He also stated we have good players coming of age and the underage structure will bear more rewards. Most Meath supporters particularly younger supporters find themselves in unknown territory as do the players.
There are two unquestionable truths about young footballers, they fear no opposition and they can be inconsistent.
Lets call a spade a shovel if Meath perform to this level in any game they have every right to lack fear.
The question is can they ?
