When a team returns with a collection of medals, its a sign they performed well in their chosen sports. Ashbourne welcomed home five local heroes who won five medals at the recent The Special Olympics Ireland Summer Games. The event usually take place every 4 years. However, because of Covid this was the first Games since 2018.

The games took place from Thurs 18th to Sun 21st in sporting venues all over Dublin. The athletes travelled from all over Ireland  to their accommodation venues in UCD and Maynooth Student accommodation. They were then bussed every day to their competition venues.

In total 1277 athletes, with the help of over 500 coaches, competed to win honours but above all to participate from the 5 Regions, that include Ulster, Connacht, Munster, Easter and Leister with over 2000 volunteers also helping run the event in 1 12 different sports competitions

Club Ash Special Olympics Sports Club were delighted to have 5 of their athletes and 1 coach taking part for Leinster. In doing so winning medals included, Conor Keaveney -(7 a-side soccer Leinster 1 Team – Silver Medal),  Karl Bourke -( 7 a-side soccer Leinster 2 Team – Silver Medal), Eoin Carey -( Athletics – Gold Medal),  Wayne Farrell – Athletics -(Gold, Silver and Bronze medals), Bryan McLoughlin – Athletics ( Silver and Bronze medals).

A spokesperson,  Deirdre Keaveney,  told Meath Live that Club Ash was formed back in 2005 with over 20 members and paid thanks to all who help the team keep going. We also get support from Ashbourne Community Centre using the centres facilities every Saturday from 10.00 am to 11.00 am. Thanks is also given to the Ashbourne Golf Club who host an 8 week lessons and golf to members. A lot of time and effort is put in by family member but the support of community is appreciated.

The athlete oath for Special Olympics is “LET ME WIN. BUT IF I CANNOT WIN LET ME BE BRAVE IN THE ATTEMPT.
